Summertime Moving Do’s and Dont’s

Summer is one of the most popular seasons for moving because days are longer and schedules tend to be more flexible. But with all the sunshine comes heat, and that can quickly turn a move into a sweaty struggle if you’re not prepared. To help, we’ve created a handy list of summertime moving Dos and Don’ts to keep your move smooth, safe, and stress-free!

Do’s of Summertime Moving

  • DO MOVE EARLY IN THE MORNING OR AFTER 5 PM TO BEAT THE HEAT.
    • Temperatures are the coolest during these times, making the physical effort of moving more manageable. Avoid the midday heat when the sun is strongest to reduce the risk of heat exhaustion.
  • DO MAKE A MOVING CHECKLIST.
    • Planning ahead keeps your move organized! A checklist ensures you don’t overlook essential tasks, from hiring movers to setting up utilities at your new home.
  • DO STORE PERISHABLES IN A COOLER.
    • Food and other perishable items can spoil quickly in high heat. Use a cooler with ice packs or frozen water bottles to keep these items fresh during transport.
  • DO DEFROST YOUR FREEZER 24 HOURS BEFORE MOVING.
    • Avoid leaks and messy cleanups by emptying and unplugging your fridge/freezer the day before your move. Let it fully defrost and dry out before moving.
  • DO FIND A BABYSITTER FOR YOUR CHILDREN, PETS, OR PLANTS.
    • Moving day can be hectic. Having someone look after your kids, animals, or delicate plants keeps them safe and out of the chaos, allowing you to focus on the move.

Don’ts of Summertime Moving

  • DON’T FORGET TO TAKE BREAKS!
    • It’s easy to overexert yourself in the heat. Stay hydrated, rest often, and listen to your body to avoid heat-related illnesses.
  • DON’T PACK LAST MINUTE.
    • Having an early packing plan can lessen the stress on moving day. Start sorting about four weeks before your move-in date, work room by room, and aim to be fully packed at least two days in advance.
  • DON’T LEAVE YOUR AC OFF IN YOUR NEW HOME.
    • Turn on the air conditioning the night before your move-in. Arriving at a cool, comfortable space makes unpacking more pleasant and gives you relief from the heat.
  • DON’T STORE ELECTRONICS IN NON-AIR-CONDITIONED VEHICLES.
    • Heat can damage sensitive electronics. Transport them in a climate-controlled car whenever possible to protect against overheating.

By following these tips, you’ll set yourself up for a much smoother move, even under the summer sun. Happy moving!
