How to Label Moving Boxes – 8 Tips to Follow

Moving has many moving parts, but it doesn’t have to add stress to your plate. Whether you’re moving across town or to a different hemisphere, organization is the key to a successful and stress-free move. Let’s dive into these eight labeling tips to keep your move organized and smooth.

1) Prepare Supplies Beforehand

The first thing you should do before your belongings even touch the bottom of a box is prepare your labeling supplies. Based on your preferences, obtain bubble wrap, packing paper, packing peanuts, packing table labels, and permanent markers. Also, keep plenty of markers on hand so you never run out of ink, as well as options for easy color coding.

Next, get some sturdy boxes. These can be found quickly and relatively cheaply at local supermarkets, hardware stores, tech stores, and even some post offices. When working with Mesa Moving we may also have used boxes that you can use or new ones we can sell you! It’s also not uncommon to find used boxes nearby through social media posts if you’re looking.

2) Take Inventory

Inventory lists are a great way to maintain detailed organization throughout the moving process. Start by naming your label, then list the contents of the box. Each box or label should have something signifying that matches your key.

3) Color Code and Other Labeling Strategies

Color coding helps organize your belongings, keep things where they are meant to be, and plan how to unpack items later. These systems work with your inventory list to keep labeling easy and stress-free.

There are plenty of different ways to color code. Post-its (we recommend sealing these with clear packing tape so they don’t get lost in transit), colored markers, or even symbols can help identify where boxes should be stored during the moving process. These should go on all sides of your boxes as a visual aid for any configuration. The best part about coding is that you can choose any strategy to fit your needs.

4) Utilize Fragile Stickers and Safety Warnings

Label your boxes with fragile stickers and other safety warnings. These warnings ensure that you or your movers will handle any delicate items with care. Be sure not to pack anything that could cause a safety issue, like harsh chemicals or flammable fluids and gases. If you do need to transport those, contact a professional mover to go over the requirements needed to keep you and your belongings safe.

5) Label with Basic Descriptors

Keep your labels simple and descriptive. Use basic descriptors that reference location or what items are in the box to identify what’s inside when unpacking efficiently.

6) Save a Box for Necessities and Mark Accordingly

Creating a box to store necessary items can ease the stress of moving and keep you organized. This box should contain whatever you may want access to immediately after moving. Clearly label this box with a signifying word like “Urgent” or “Essential.” By making this box distinguishable from the others, you’ll easily find whatever you need to make your new place as comfortable as possible.

7) Mark High Priority Boxes

Any essential items you might need immediately after moving should be marked as high priority. This will make it easier to find items you might need before everything else gets unpacked. These items may include legal documents, bank information, technology, or other home devices. After unpacking your essentials, these high-priority boxes can be unpacked next.

8) Label with Last Name and New Address

For extra security and to ensure organization, label each box with your last name and new address. If you’re utilizing a moving company, you should also label your boxes with your order number to be safe. This is a significant additional step, especially if you’re using a moving company or storage facility, because it will help ensure your items all stay together. You may also consider adding your phone number or other identifying information.

Now you’re ready to label your boxes and get to moving. You’ll be more organized than ever before and have no trouble finding all your essentials!
