- Class A: Required to operate any combination vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, with the GVWR of towed vehicles of over 10,000 pounds.
- Class B: Required to operate any single vehicle with a GVWR of over 26,001 pounds or commercial vehicles towing a trailer that weighs 10,000 pounds or less.
- Class C: Required for vehicles that carry 16 or more passengers, including the driver. Additionally, Class C licenses are required for anyone operating a vehicle that carries hazardous materials.
As a professional mover, your moving truck license requirements will likely be a Class B CDL if you’re required to get a CDL license. You may also need additional endorsements, which require additional road or written exams. For example, if you want to operate a double or triple trailer, you will need an Endorsement T.
Basic CDL Requirements
To obtain a CDL license, you will need to meet the following basic requirements:
- You must be at least 18 years old to operate a commercial vehicle within your state.
- You must be at least 21 years old if you operate a vehicle carrying hazardous materials or driving outside of your state.
- You must have a valid, unexpired driver’s license.
- You must be a U.S. citizen or lawful, permanent resident.
- You must meet medical CDL requirements.
- You must be able to pass written and driving exams.
