Sustainability and eco-friendly themes are more important than ever in today’s society, and there are numerous areas where they can be applied. And while you may not have considered it as a candidate here, one major area where you can promote sustainability and limit your carbon footprint is during any sort of move you’re taking part in.
At Mesa Moving and Storage, we’re proud to promote sustainable themes for all our moving services, both local and long-distance. We use eco-friendly packing materials and equipment wherever possible, plus do so in ways that promote both savings and sustainability for all our clients. Both on your own and while working with our team of movers, what are some simple ways to keep your move eco-friendly and minimize your carbon footprint? Here’s a primer.
Even if you aren’t planning to move in the near future, we recommend organizing your belongings and regularly purging junk you don’t need. Over time, this will become habit — and if you do ever move, you’ll not only have to spend less time moving your things but you’ll also benefit from lower moving costs. In addition, you’ll be taking less time for the move and creating a smaller footprint.
Recycle and Reuse
There are several ways to recycle or repurpose items around your home to make moving both simpler and more eco-friendly:
- Use newspapers for packing: If you’re uncomfortable with the thought of using newsprint for packing, just use old newspapers. Any size is fine, but if it’s a large piece, fold it into quarters to make smaller sheets.
- Use recycled boxes: You don’t have to use new boxes, and these are typically more expensive. Reuse old boxes that are still in good shape; if it’s too large for moving, you can always cut it down to size or recycle the box itself.
- Donate items: Donate any of your belongings that aren’t being moved and no longer have a place in your home. You’ll be able to make sure that they find a good home and are used, plus you can take a tax deduction for the donation.
If you don’t have recyclable boxes available, one alternative you might consider is renting moving boxes and other containers. While you’ll need to find a recycling facility when moving day is done, this can save you money on boxes and it will limit the amount of new materials that are needed for your move.
Plan Ahead for Your Move
By organizing ahead of time and considering ways to minimize your footprint during your move, you can do wonders for your sustainability efforts. You’ll limit waste and wasted time alike, making the process efficient without creating a larger impact on your surroundings than needed.
