Denver has amazing activities that you’ll enjoy. Whether you’re a hiker, biker, or music lover, the Mile High City has it all. The U.S. News ranked the Denver area number two on its Best Places to Live in America list. Are you moving to Denver, Colorado soon? If so, here are five outstanding recreational places you should check out this spring.
1. The Denver Botanic Gardens
Spring is a wonderful time to explore the Mile High City’s natural flora. Start at The Denver Botanic Gardens, a 24-acre area located in Cheesman Park. Also, the area has a famous living museum. The facility cares for plants during every stage of their life cycles.
Visitors can tour the Botanic Gardens’ opulent living exhibits. The lush facility displays more than 50 natural exhibits that guests can view. These exhibits include the Alpine, Amenity, Steppe, and Tropical Showcases. This place also has a charming Japanese Tea Garden, featuring manicured bonsai trees. Visitors can visit the South African Plaza with blooming, torch lilies, too. Garden visitors also will enjoy lovely sculptures in the gardens.
2. The Denver Zoo
The Denver Zoo is a great place to enjoy a fun adventure. The facility resembles a Kenyan nature preserve. It has more than 3,000 animals. The list includes African penguins, Asian elephants, Amur Leopards, orangutans, seals, and giraffes. Snake fans can also tour the zoo’s Tropical Discovery exhibit to see its tree pythons.
From mid-March until early April, the facility will host its Ultimate Spring Break event. During this event, zookeepers will present talks about their animal residents. Visitors can also enjoy Up-Close Animal Encounters and special demonstrations.
All proceeds from the Ultimate Spring Break event will go to save wildlife in the city and throughout the world.
3. The 16th Street Mall
During the spring thaw, you should visit the 16th Street Mall. This area extends along the southern end of the LoDo district. It also stretches past Larimer Square.
Famous architect I.M. Pei designed the 16th Street Mall. The mile-long path has a rattlesnake pattern made of red, white, and gray granite. Also, a free shuttle called the MallRide travels up and down the 16th Street Mall.
Denver’s iconic mall has outstanding dining establishments and entertainment venues for travelers. There is a gigantic shopping mall at the south end called the Denver Pavilions. It has more than two dozen shops, 12 movie theaters, and multiple restaurants. During the evening, you can enjoy a romantic ride in a horse-drawn carriage.
4. Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater
There are several entertainment venues around the Denver metro area, too. For example, you can take a day trip to Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater. This destination is a geological wonder located outside of the Denver area. The beautiful 700-acre park is located more than 6,450 feet above sea level. Also, Red Rocks is the world’s only naturally-occurring, acoustically perfect amphitheater. It has mesmerizing views of sandstone cliffs and hiking trails. The park shows the geographic transition between the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains, too. You’ll see the region’s stunning variety of birds, animals, and plants.
During the late summer, you can catch Denver activities like the concert series at the large amphitheater. This has hosted acts like Sting, the Beatles, U2, and Tom Petty.
5. Mount Evans Scenic Byway
During the springtime, you should drive to the enchanting town of Mount Evans. It sits in the Rocky Mountains. Visitors must travel across the Mount Evans Scenic Byway before they can reach the town. Travelers have nicknamed it “the road into the sky” because of its 9,000 feet of elevation changes. Visitors can pause to admire awe-inspiring views of the Rocky Mountains. At Mount Evans’s peak, drivers will be 14,264 feet above sea level.
Echo Lake Park is another prominent tourist area between Mount Evans and Idaho Spring. The national park has superb hiking, picnic facilities, and fishing areas.
